Over the last two years, I have spent tens-of-hours searching for strains that help with headaches. Yet, somehow, my top 3 strains of choice are sativa-dominants with hardcore lemony flavors. Although, maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised since the lemon flavor in cannabis is a result of the presence of the limonene terpene. And, if you do an online search for more information about the limonene terpene, you’ll find multiple references of it being used to help treat various types of inflammation, including bronchitis. It’s no wonder, then, that — as someone who lives primarily with tension migraines and headaches — I would benefit from strains that are known to help with inflammation.

Super Lemon Haze, a sativa-dominant strain, is my absolute favorite strain of all time. In my experience, it is also one of the best strains for migraines. First of all, it smells so good. The name isn’t messing around. No matter how you consume this strain, you’re sure to be hit with the blunt smell of lemon (pun intended). Second, this strain is also really good for being social. If you have chronic pain and/or a chronic illness, you know how difficult it can be to go out after a day of being in pain. Super Lemon Haze is the perfect strain for getting you out of the house. It lifted my spirits, it eased my physical pain, and it dampened my irrational worries. My favorite way to consume this strain is in a cartridge as it allows for the most dosing control.

Another strain I like for headaches is called Dirty Girl, and it is a sativa-dominant strain. If you just giggled, welcome to the club. But also, get ready because this strain is amazing. I got this strain for the first time in March 2017. I still remember the first delicious inhale of its herbal lemon and fresh forest pine flavors. It felt like I was drinking a giant mug of hot lemon tea while camping in the middle of the forest near the Cle Elum River in Washington State. It was heavenly. The high was mellow, too. I felt lighter, but I also felt more regulated and attentive.I also maintained functionality with this strain, which was a bonus when I was dosing throughout the workday.

Trainwreck is another strain I previously dosed with throughout the workday. However, while I was able to consume Dirty Girl at any time of the day, I felt as though Trainwreck was most effective when I consumed it in the morning. I think that is because it has such a heavy high. Consuming heavy-hitting Trainwreck in the morning allowed the effects to fade out slowly over the coarse of the day. A negative to the heavy high is that it could cause anxiety and/or paranoia for people who are more sensitive to those negative attributes of cannabis. If you fit that description, it would probably be best to steer clear of this strain or it might end up doing more harm than good.
